Looker Studio, which Google's own pages now call Data Studio, is free and works well for numbers in Google Sheets, Analytics and Ads, but you build every report yourself, its AI features are limited, and it reports without acting. For a small business the main alternatives are Databox (KPIs from 130+ apps), Zoho Analytics (finance and shop connectors), Power BI (Microsoft shops), Papercrane (AI-built boards with automations), Claude Dashboards (paid Claude plans with warehouse data) and Smart Business HQ, our product, which builds and hosts the board for you with automations and an approval step.

The name: Looker Studio is now Data Studio

If you searched for Looker Studio and landed on pages saying Data Studio, you are in the right place. Google's product page, which the old cloud.google.com/looker-studio address now redirects to, calls the product Data Studio, and so do its help and Gemini pages. Some 2026 dashboard lists use the new name as well. It is the same free report builder. We use both names on this page so you can find it either way.

What Looker Studio does well

Why small businesses look for a Looker Studio alternative

You build everything. It is self-service. Data Studio Pro adds Google Cloud support and admin features, not someone to build your reports.
AI is thin. With Pro, Gemini can write calculated fields from plain language and add charts to Slides, both in preview. Building a whole dashboard from one prompt is not on Google's pages.
Shopify, QuickBooks and Stripe are not among Google's named sources. Google lists over 1,300 Community Connectors.
It reports; it does not act. Nothing goes out except the reports you schedule.

Routines run AI tasks on a schedule and send the result by email or Slack.

Lacks: a no-charge team plan (Free is 1 user), acting in other apps (Agents are "Soon"), and Routines below the Team plan. See Databox alternatives.

Zoho Analytics

Better than Looker Studio at: finance and shop connectors with automatic sync (QuickBooks, Xero, Sage, Stripe, Shopify, WooCommerce), an AI agent that creates reports and dashboards (Ask Zia, on Premium and Enterprise), and actions through Zoho Flow.

Lacks: a no-charge tier for a whole team (the free plan is 2 users and 10,000 rows); extra viewers come in blocks of 25.

Price: not readable on Zoho's page on 8 October 2026.

Power BI

Better than Looker Studio at: modelling depth, 188 Power Query connectors, scheduled refresh up to 8 times a day on Pro, and Copilot report building on paid capacity.

Lacks: free sharing (viewers need Pro licences unless you buy large capacity), and Shopify, QuickBooks, Stripe and Xero are not in Microsoft's connector list. See Power BI alternatives.

Price: Pro $14.00 per user per month, paid yearly.

Papercrane

Better than Looker Studio at: AI building and doing work. Its agent builds a hosted dashboard from one conversation, connects Shopify, Stripe, QuickBooks and more, refreshes on a schedule, and runs recurring automations. Viewers need no account.

Lacks: you connect and drive it yourself, and AI credits are billed on top of Pro.

Price: Free (up to 5 dashboards, 1 user); Pro $100 a month flat for up to 5 members, plus AI credits.

Claude Dashboards

Better than Looker Studio at: asking in plain language. On a paid Claude plan, Claude builds a dashboard from a warehouse or a connected app such as Salesforce, and every chart shows its query. Beta since 8 October 2026.

Lacks: everyone who opens a shared dashboard needs a Claude account, it is not on the Free plan, and Anthropic does not say how often it refreshes.

Price: included in Pro ($17 a month billed yearly or $20 monthly, per person) and up.

Smart Business HQ (ours)

Better than Looker Studio at: being built and run for you. We interview you, build the board, connect your apps (a Shopify shop, Google Sheets, Google Analytics, review pages and more), host it and change it when you ask. Every plan includes your own private server. Automations draft replies, reminders and posts, and anything going out waits in Approvals for your yes unless you switch that tool to send by itself.

Lacks: Looker Studio's price, its long source list and embedding. It does not read a warehouse, and cards show source and date, not the query.

Price: Personal from $99 a month plus a setup fee; Business quoted in a meeting.

A note for Google Sheets users

If your numbers already live in one Google Sheet, Google's Sheets canvas (announced 13 August 2026) lets Gemini build an interactive mini-app, including a dashboard, on top of the sheet from one prompt, with changes syncing both ways in real time. It is on Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and Google AI Pro and Ultra, in English, on the web.

How to choose

Stay with Looker Studio if it is free, your data is in Google tools and you enjoy building. Move to Databox or Zoho Analytics for small-business app connectors. Questions

Is Looker Studio now called Data Studio?

Yes. Google's product page (cloud.google.com/data-studio; the old cloud.google.com/looker-studio address now redirects there) calls the product Data Studio, and so do its help pages and the Gemini documentation. Several 2026 dashboard lists use the new name too. It is the same free report builder.

Is Looker Studio free?

Yes. Google says Data Studio 'is available at no charge for creators and report viewers.' Data Studio Pro adds Google Cloud support and admin features; Google says its per-user price varies with the length of the subscription.

Does Looker Studio connect to Shopify or QuickBooks?

They are not named among Google's own sources. Google lists over 1,300 Community Connectors; check there for a Shopify or QuickBooks connector. Databox and Zoho Analytics list Shopify and QuickBooks among their own connectors.

Can Looker Studio build a dashboard with AI?

Not from one prompt, going by Google's pages. With Data Studio Pro, Gemini can write calculated fields from plain language and add report content to Slides, both in preview. Conversational Analytics lets you chat with your data.

Is there a free alternative to Looker Studio?

Zoho Analytics (2 users, 10,000 rows), Databox (1 user) and Papercrane (up to 5 dashboards, 1 user) have free plans with limits. If your data is in Google Sheets, Google's Sheets canvas can build a dashboard on top of a sheet on some Workspace plans.
